Building Altars in the Wilderness

Genesis 12:7
“So he built an altar there to the Lord, who had appeared to him.”
📚 Read
Before beginning, read these passages slowly:
- Genesis 12:1–9
- Genesis 35:1–7
- 1 Samuel 7:3–12
- Psalm 77:11–12
Take your time. Ask God to show you what He wants you to notice.
👀 Observe
Throughout Scripture, God’s people often marked significant encounters with Him by building altars.
An altar became a place of remembrance.
A place where they could look back and say:
“God met me here.”
Notice what happens in these passages:
- What had God done before the altar was built?
- What did the altar represent?
- What was happening in the lives of these people when they stopped to remember God?
- What does this teach you about remembering God’s faithfulness?
💭 Reflect
Wilderness seasons can make us focus so much on what we are still waiting for that we forget what God has already done.
Think about your own journey.
Where have you seen God’s hand?
Maybe it was an answered prayer.
Maybe it was protection you didn’t recognize until later.
Maybe it was strength when you thought you had none left.
Maybe God didn’t change the situation, but He carried you through it.
What is one place, season, or moment in your life where you can say:
“God met me here.”
Write it down.
Don’t rush past it.
❤️ Apply
Your altar doesn’t have to be made of stones.
It can be a journal entry.
A Scripture you’ve carried through a difficult season.
A photograph.
A prayer you’ve written.
A testimony.
A quiet moment where you stop and thank God.
This week, create a small altar of remembrance.
Write down three things God has done for you.
Then write:
“Thus far the Lord has helped me.”
— 1 Samuel 7:12
When the future feels uncertain, return to what you know:
God has been faithful.
🙏 Pray
Father,
Teach me not to forget Your faithfulness when I am walking through unfamiliar places.
When I become consumed by what I don’t understand, remind me of what You have already carried me through.
Help me recognize the moments where You have met me, sustained me, protected me, corrected me, restored me, and strengthened me.
Give me the wisdom to build altars of remembrance instead of monuments to my worries.
May I never forget:
You were there then.
You are here now.
And You will be there when I arrive at what comes next.
In Jesus’ name,

🌊 Weekly Challenge
Build your altar of remembrance.
This week, take a few quiet minutes to write down three moments when God met you.
They don’t have to be dramatic.
Maybe He answered a prayer.
Maybe He gave you strength.
Maybe He provided when you didn’t know how things would work out.
Maybe He simply gave you peace when nothing around you made sense.
Write each one down and begin with:
“God met me here…”
Then, whenever you feel discouraged this week, return to your list and remember:
The God who was faithful then is still faithful now. 🌊🤍
Beachside Reflection
Sometimes we are so focused on getting out of the wilderness that we forget to notice who walked through it with us.
Don’t only remember the wilderness.
Remember the God who met you there.

This week, don’t just remember what God has done—let His faithfulness change the way you walk through today.
When you find yourself worrying about what is ahead, pause and remember where God has already met you.
Share one testimony of God’s faithfulness with someone this week. Your story may be the encouragement they need to keep trusting Him.
Don’t let the wilderness erase your memory of God’s goodness.
Carry your testimony with you.
God met me there.
God is with me here.
