When God Becomes Your Closest Companion
Loneliness is one of the quiet realities of living abroad.
It doesn’t always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it appears in small moments — when something good happens and you have no one familiar to share it with. Or when something hurts and there is no one who fully understands your journey.
Yet it is often in these exact moments that prayer becomes more than routine. It becomes refuge.
“The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.” (Psalm 145:18)
Prayer reminds us that even when people feel far, God is near.
Prayer Is Not About Perfect Words
Many people hesitate to pray because they believe they need the right words. But prayer was never meant to be performance.
Prayer is simply honesty before God.
You can tell Him:
- when you feel strong
- when you feel tired
- when you feel uncertain
He already knows. Prayer invites His peace into your awareness.
Loneliness Can Become Sacred Space
Loneliness, though painful, can open space for deeper connection with God.
When distractions are removed, faith becomes clearer. You begin to see that God is not just part of your life — He is your constant companion.
“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
God’s presence does not depend on geography. He meets you wherever you are planted.
A Prayer for the Lonely Expat
You can pray this slowly, or use it as a guide for your own words:
*Lord, You see where I am.
You know the distance I feel from home, from familiarity, from comfort.
Remind me that I am never truly alone.
When loneliness comes, let me feel Your presence near me.
When uncertainty surrounds me, give me peace that surpasses understanding.
Help me trust that You are guiding my steps, even here.

Prayer Strengthens What Loneliness Tries to Weaken
Loneliness can make faith feel fragile. But prayer strengthens the connection that loneliness cannot break.
